The 4th Trimester

I believe the 4th trimester, meaning the 3 months after your newborn comes into this world, is one of the most sacred and important moments in your life. It is a time of rest, healing, recovery, connection, growth and stillness. Having been in healthcare for over 15 years, I believe that the initial visits to your doctor for newborn care can be very disruptive and asynchronous with the level of sanctity this chapter deserves. And everything we offer at these visits in a medical environment, can just as easily be brought to you, in your home. To support this moment in your life, I’ve developed a 4th trimester care package that allows for the following

  • I’ll come to you for your visits

  • You’ll have access to me for questions and concerns that may arise

  • I will coordinate directly with your care providers, whether that be your midwife, your doula, your OB or your mother in-law!

Specifics about the 4th trimester care package

Below is a list of services included in your care package:

  1. Five home visits throughout the first 3 months. These can be spaced out as you choose, and we can decide as we go. For instance, you may want me to come more frequently at the beginning if we are managing weight gain or jaundice, and then not need me much after 4 weeks of life. Or you may be doing great at the beginning, but if your newborn gets a cold or a rash or constipation and we are managing an acute problem, you’ll want me to come more frequently. These 5 visits are a fluid service, and we can always add more home visits if needed. 

  2. As a board certified Family Physician, I take care of newborns AND the parents. So if the mom or dad have health issues related to the newborn stages (mastitis, UTI, musculoskeletal pain, or postpartum depression/anxiety) I can also work with you on these concerns. 

  3. Direct access to me during working hours, 7 days a week, 9-5pm. You can text or call me directly if you need anything. 

  4. Coordination of care with your care team (doulas, midwives, OBs)

  5. Access to our electronic medical record for questions, photos, growth chart

  6. A custom newborn binder with printed growth charts, developmental milestones and polaroids photos of your little one with Dr. Max and the family (trust me, you’ll love looking back on this in 10 years)


Potential schedule of the 5 home visits: 

  1. Within the first week of life

    1. Depending on the care you have from your OB, doula or midwife, we can decide when this first visit is appropriate. I recommend that a healthcare provider, either myself or a midwife, evaluate the newborn within the first 24 hours, and then again on days 3 or 4 and 7 of life. If you don’t have another provider coming to you, I can do these visits . Otherwise, if you have a midwife for the initial visits, I can come when your baby is 7 days old to start. It’s normal for infants to lose weight over the first 7 days of life, but they should begin to gain weight by day 7 and by the time they are 2 weeks old, should have passed their birth weight. 

  2. 2 week check-up

    1. At this visit, we assess some of the first developmental milestones, including weight gain and primitive reflexes. We monitor the umbilical stump and its natural detachment. We monitor skin health, jaundice, bowel patterns and bonding

  3. 4 week check-up

    1. Weight, growth, feeding, sleep hygiene, developmental milestones, bonding

  4. 2 month check-up

    1. Weight, growth, feeding, sleep hygiene, developmental milestones, sleep hygiene, bonding, skull shape and form

  5. 3 month check-up

    1. Weight, growth, feeding, sleep hygiene, developmental milestones, sleep hygiene, bonding, skull shape and form

Costs

  • I charge a flat fee of $2500 for the 4th trimester care package of

  • This includes 5 home visits and access to me via phone and text 7 days a week during working hours (9-5)

  • Duration of services last 3 months

  • This also includes healthcare for the new parent(s) as it relates to this newborn phase.

  • Additional home visits beyond the 5 included cost $500

  • Standard office visits in my home-clinic in Santa Monica cost $300 

  • We can generate a superbill for you to submit to your insurance
